  1. Inferno Dante: Circle 4 Questions

    1) In Circle 4, there are the Hoarders and Wasters in the pit as well as the Angry and Sullen in the Styx marsh. Why does Dante place two main groups into one circle in Hell?

    2) Do you think the punishment for the Hoarders and Wasters are justified? Why do you think Dante had made the rolling of the stones at each other their punishment? What would you have done instead?

    3) In Circle 4, there is the bubbling marsh the Styx which in Greek Mythology is also the river that leads to the underworld. Does this mean that the Styx in Circle 4 represents a division between the circles in hell, example between the upper circles and lower circles?

    4) Why is there no overseer for the Angry and Sullen like there are for the all other circles? (Plutus oversees the Hoarders and Wasters for he is the God of Wealth but does not look over the Styx)

    5) What do you think the "tower " is for? Why is it there?

    6) It is mentioned that the God of Fortune spreads fortune to certain people at a give time. From the perspective of a human, the selective preference of the God of Fortune seems unfair. Yet why is it that Dante represents the God of Fortune as a just and blessed angelic presence from God in Circle 4?

  2. How is this punishment appropriate for this circle? What is the relevance of Virgil's description of fortune in 7.70-96?

Why does Dante punish the hoarders and thrifters the way he does? What do the boulders represent?

Who guards the fourth circle? Why is this relevant to Canto 7?

What is the relevance of the Styx river and the marsh?

In 7.101-104, Dante learns that the angry and depressed are in the marsh. Why is this in canto 7?
